As many of you know, I’ve been sick recently which prompted a plethora of people to say “Make sure you take Vitamin C!”
In a world where organic, non-GMO, and plant based have significantly increased in popularity I found it fascinating that a synthetically produced vitamin was still the go to response. Now don’t get me wrong…there were wellness shots, a Nektar juice cold buster, and elderberry thrown into the suggestion list but vitamin C still took first place.
So what is wrong with a Vitamin C supplement?
Maybe nothing and maybe everything. First off, it is always preferable to get necessary vitamins, minerals and nutrients through your diet. Whole food has so much more than just vitamins and minerals as it contains necessary micronutrients, fiber and antioxidants all in one mouthful!
Now there are times where diet alone doesn’t provide enough vitamins or nutrients, and this is where vitamin supplements become helpful to help make up that deficiency. But did you know, that Vitamin C supplements are usually extracted from corn? And with corn being one of the leading GMO crops in the US, you can just take a wild guess at what is in vitamin supplements (unless they are specifically labeled non-GMO or organic).
YIKES! I don’t think a bunch of GMO corn is what people were envisioning would help me fight off a cold!
So I felt compelled to share how I got an extra dose of vitamin C in about two minutes!
What you need:
- Cutting board
- Kitchen knife
- Juicer
- 4 oranges
Directions:
1. Slice oranges in half (unless you are using a juicer machine and then peel them….unless you want the fiber from the peel)
2. Juice oranges
3. Pour into a jar over ice
4. Enjoy!
Juicing oranges seems intense but I was able to do this all in just two minutes! And here is the video to prove it. In just two minutes, I squeezed in some extra Vitamin C (approximately 125 milligrams in 8 oz) and was able to enjoy some sweet juice too!
